O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. Her performance on the show impressed panel of judges and she was voted into an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received high praise by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were surprised by her performance and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following an impressive string of performances. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil received a call immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
